How do you define success? Is it the size of your pay cheque? The dimensions of your office? The hours you put in? Five to 10 years ago, most Australian women would have ticked at least one of those boxes. Today, according to a new study commissioned by the online professional network, LinkedIn, 65 per cent of Australian women define success as having the right balance between their work and personal life (roughly the same percentage nominated “salary” five to 10 years ago). Having an interesting job also equates to success for 62 per cent of respondents. However they define it, a whopping 82 per cent of Australian women consider their careers successful.
But it’s a desire for flexibility in the workplace that throws up an interesting conundrum: 68 per cent of women declared flexibility in the workplace more important than having “a greater representation of women at the senior level”. As one online retailer noted, flexible work policies need to be advocated by women in senior management.
LinkedIn surveyed 400 professional women between the ages of 18 and 65.
