The English-born former park ranger won the award for her novel Mateship With Birds, which traces the story of a lonely Victorian farmer's relationship with his neighbour who works as an aged care nurse.

Although she said she doesn't "write particularly for women", Tiffany said female writers were supportive of one another. Putting her money where her mouth is, she declared she'd share $10,000 of her winnings with the five other shortlisted writers.
