Life Of Pi by Yann Martel (Canongate Books, $24.95)
A book I read and immediately thought, "Damn, wish I'd written that one." Not only original and captivating, this is a love letter to the power of fiction.

The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald (Oxford University Press, $12.95)
This was the first time I'd realised that a book's narrator might not be telling the truth. I've used unreliable narrators many times since, and Fitzgerald is the master.

Turtle Moon by Alice Hoffman (Vintage, $23.95)
Alice is my favourite writer because she makes writing look easy (and it never is) and her words flow like a stream - her books are still the ones I look forward to the most, annually.
