A photo of a group of female soldiers in the US breastfeeding their children in uniform is going viral, for all the right reasons.

The idea for the photo came from professional photographer and former Air Force service member, Tara Ruby, after she learned about a new nursing room at Fort Bliss Army base in El Paso, Texas.

Inspired by her own personal experiences as a mother in the military, she wanted to showcase the nursing mothers wearing their uniforms, hoping to prove that being a mother doesn't make them any less of a soldier.

"Today I believe we made history," Ruby wrote in a post on her Facebook account. "To my knowledge a group photo to show support of active duty military mommies nursing their little's has never been done."

Ruby hopes that through the photograph it will both normalise breastfeeding as a whole but also within the male-dominated context of the military.

"Seeing a picture like that helps mothers understand they can be an active soldier and provide support to their children," Ruby said.

"Breastfeeding their babies doesn't make them less of a soldier," she added. "I believe it makes them a better one. Juggling the tasks and expectations of a soldier, plus providing for their own in the best way they possibly can, makes these ladies even stronger for it."
