FIFA might be under investigation by the FBI for alleged corruption and kickbacks, but in the digital world the soccer heavyweight is doing something right.

For the first time ever, international women’s teams will feature in the 2016 edition of the popular FIFA video game.

Since it was first released in 1993, the video game has exclusively featured men’s teams, but it appears that FIFA finally got the memo that women play 'the world game' too.

Our very own Matildas will be one of 12 sides added to the mix. Other teams include Brazil, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, and the USA.

Stephanie Houghton – who will be featured as captain of the English side – is interested to see how she will be rated technically. "Quite a few of us in the team play FIFA so I'm sure there will be a bit of banter about our ratings. I'm looking forward to scoring as myself for the first time," she said.

According to their website, fans have been wanting to see women playing virtual soccer for years.
