The world would look very different if men menstruated: think less shame, lots of posting about it to social media and NASA designing a next level, technologically advanced tampon, according UK charity WaterAid.

To mark Menstrual Hygiene Day the organisation surveyed 2,000 people to ask them what would be different if blokes got their period. The answer? 30 per cent of respondents said sports commentators would openly chat about how menstrual cycles might affect athletic performance and one in ten believed that trainers would try to coordinate their players' menstrual cycles. Meanwhile, 37% of women thought TV characters would talk about their periods and 26% said they believed that food brands would incorporate their PMT-busting qualities to promote their brand.

"If men had periods it would be considered a sign of virility,” WaterAid said in a press release. "Men would brag about them on Facebook, #imonmyperiod would probably trend regularly on Twitter, and tampon adverts would be fronted by celebrities."

The group has also released three parody videos, which offer a window into just how different things would look if blokes got their period.

It’s all part of WaterAid's campaign to highlight the fact that 1.25 billion women around the world don’t have access to a toilet when they menstruate.

“Every day 800 million women have their period, and yet most of us consider it an embarrassing and taboo subject," WaterAid's Chief Executive Officer Barbara Frost has said. "So we have had a bit of fun trying to imagine whether attitudes would be different if men had periods."
