The entire world watched as George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin tied the knot with a lavish celebration in Venice last year but it is only now that the actor has revealed how he popped the question. Far from hiring out a favourite restaurant or planning a champagne-filled surprise, Clooney has told CBS that he proposed to the renowned human rights lawyer while they were enjoying a quiet night in at his Studio City, California home.
"It happened pretty quickly. I knew fairly quickly that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with Amal," he said. "But, you know, I have to say, when I asked her — you know — we had never talked about it. So it was all — there was, you know — there wasn't, like, 'Hey, maybe we should get married.' I literally — I dropped it on her.”
"She just kept saying, "Oh my God" and "Wow." And we just sat there,’ he recounted. "Finally, I just said, 'Listen.' You know, I'm 53, at the time, or 52, I think, at the time, and I said, 'You know, I've been on my knee now for about 28 minutes. So I gotta get an answer out of this, 'cause I'm gonna throw a hip out.”
Adding to the moment was the fact that when he asked Alamuddin to be has wife at his Studio City, California home a song by his aunt, famed singer Rosemary Clooney, was playing in the background.
Of falling for the British legal eagle, the Monuments Men star said: "I have someone who I can talk to about anything and someone who I care more about than I've cared about anybody. So it's really nice.”
“She's my spell checker too,” he admitted. Handy.
