Heading to Canberra to see the much-vaunted, extremely well received exhibition of James Turrell’s transcendent light-based artworks at the National Gallery of Australia? Why not go on a naked tour.

Yes, you read that right: a naked tour.

For two days on April 1 and 2, visitors to our nation’s most prestigious art gallery will be able to take part in three sets of guided tours of the James Turrell exhibition while completely nude.

The tours are open to select viewers (about 150 people over the two days) and will be led by Stuart Ringholt, a Melbourne-based artist and naked tour enthusiast who has previously led similar stripped-bare experiences at Hobart’s MONA gallery.

But the idea isn’t Ringholt’s, it’s actually the artist's. Turrell first encouraged art enthusiasts to bare all at a gallery containing one of his works in Japan. The NGA has taken things one step further, opening the whole exhibition up to a series of naked tours that promise to “remove the material barriers between artist and audience”.

Visitors have to be at least 18 years old and spots on the tour are strictly limited. The experiences will take place outside of normal gallery hours at 5.30PM on April 1 and 7AM and 7.30PM on April 2. Only the truly brave need apply.

Head to the NGA for more information.
