The Stella Prize Shortlist Has Been Announced

The prestigious Stella Prize shortlist has today been revealed - and it comes with a few surprises. In alphabetical order, the list is as follows:

Foreign Soil by Maxine Beneba Clarke (Hachette)
The Strays by Emily Bitto (Affirm Press)
The Invisible History of the Human Race by Christine Kenneally (Black Inc)
The Eye of the Sheep by Sofie Laguna (Allen & Unwin)
The Golden Age by Joan London (Random House)
Heat and Light by Ellen van Neerven (UQP)

The shortlist represents an incredibly diverse range of literary works by Australian female authors. A third of the titles are debut works, and both of the big releases included in the original longlist – Helen Garner’s true crime tale This House Of Grief and Sonya Hartnett’s Golden Boys – did not make the cut.

“We are thrilled with the strength and diversity of the 2015 Stella Prize shortlist,” the executive director of the prize, Aviva Tuffield, said in a statement. “These six remarkable books explore themes of identity, family, displacement and belonging, with distinctly Australian resonances.”

The winner of this year’s Stella Prize – and a $50,000 grant – will be announced in Melbourne on April 21.
