Just in case you weren't sure if you had an Instagram addiction or not, here's proof: the average person reportedly spends more time using their phones and laptops than they do sleeping.

According to experts, we spend a total of 8 hours, 41 minutes engrossed in social media - as opposed to 8 hours, 21 minutes of sleep (though really, who are these people getting more than 8 hours of sleep a night?!).

It's a sobering reality for most of us living in a world connected 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

"As people increase the volume of technology in their homes, there are more distractions to keep them awake at night, reducing the amount of quality sleep they receive," Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, a UK sleep and energy coach, told the Mail Online.

"Checking emails, social media channels and browsing the internet keeps the brain working, making it more difficult to finally switch off and fall asleep."

Closer to home, the stats are just as sobering: almost two thirds of Australians (62%) turn to their smartphone instead of their partner or kids when they first wake up, with just 15% starting their day giving their partner a good morning kiss.

Further to that, 81% of us leave our phones on overnight, leading to obstructed sleep patterns.
"It is crucial that people recognise importance of a good night's sleep," said Ramlakhan.
"The health risks associated with chronic sleep debt can cause a variety of problems, leading to further illness and potential lifelong issues."
