Valentine's Day can bring out the cynic in the best of us, but we have to admit this news pulled on a heartstring or two.

A recent poll has revealed the top 10 most romantic love letters, with Johnny Cash's declaration to his wife June topping the list.

Cash wrote the letter in 1994 on the occasion of June's 65th birthday - and it hints at a love story for the ages.

"We get old and get used to each other," Cash wrote. "We think alike. We read each other's minds. We know what the other wants without asking. Sometimes we irritate each other a little bit. Maybe sometimes take each other for granted.

"But once in a while, like today, I meditate on it and realise how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met."

In second place was Winston Churchill's letter to his wife Clementine, written in 1935, followed by John Keat's proclamation to his neighbor, Fanny Brawne In 1819.

While we can assume some of the greatest love letters will never see eyes beyond the pair they were intended for, below are some excerpts from the top 10 for some inspiration. You may recognise Beethoven's words as the poem Mr Big recited to Carrie Bradshaw in the first Sex And The City movie.

Beethoven to his 'Immortal Beloved' whose true identity remains a mystery (1812)
"Though still in bed, my thoughts go out to you, my Immortal Beloved, Be calm-love me-today-yesterday-what tearful longings for you-you-you-my life-my all-farewell. Oh continue to love me-never misjudge the most faithful heart of your beloved. Ever thine. Ever mine. Ever ours."
