Facebook's Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg has set a big goal for the social networking giant: to dramatically increase the gender diversity among Facebook's employees. Currently, the demographic breakdown stands at 69% men to 31% women, numbers that are unfortunately characteristic of the overall male to female ratios in tech companies today. Sandberg wants those numbers increased to 50% men to 50% women, across all levels of the company.

"I want half and half, half across the board. 50%," Sandberg told USA Today when asked about whether she had any plans for gender diversity at Facebook.

The bottom line, Sandberg says, is that there just aren't enough women graduating from universities with computer science degrees. Just 18% of computer science graduates are women, even though women outnumber men in universities (58% of university degrees in America are awarded to men).

Even though tech companies are hiring more women at the upper echelons, Sandberg believes that diversity needs to be increased across the board. "I think we suffer from the tyranny of low expectations," Sandberg told USA Today.

Let's hope that Sandberg's raising of expectations inspires other tech companies to follow in her lead.
