Prince Harry Opens Up About The Loss Of His Mother

An emotional Prince Harry opened up about the tragic death of his mother, Princess Diana at the opening of Mamohato Children's Centre in Lesotho, Africa on November 26.

The 31-year-old royal gave a moving speech in which he described how his mother's death affected him, but how it has helped him in some way relate to the orphans he is committed to helping through his charity work.

"I knew there would always be a gaping hole that could never be filled," he said.

"The children at the centre were far younger than me, and of course, their situation was a great deal more challenging than my own. Nonetheless, we shared a similar feeling of loss, having a loved one—in my case a parent—snatched away so suddenly."

Harry, who was age 12 when his mother died in a car crash in Paris in 1997 at the age of 36, was in Africa to open the orphanage built by his charity, Sentebale, as well as naming the building's dining hall after the late Princess.

The orphanage will support children who have lost their parents due to AIDS, a cause that was also close to his mother's heart.

"It's equally important, if not more so, to do the stuff behind the scenes," Harry explained of his charity work earlier this year.

"It's something that our mother did a lot. And that's the time you really get to learn. You get the experiences and you actually get the honest truth out of people."
