Don't expect to see Cate Blanchett hitting up your Instagram feed with selfies any time soon.

The stunning Aussie actress says she doesn't understand the lure of social media, "I cannot for the life of me work out why adults are participating in that s–t," she tells Yahoo Beauty.

"People constantly are taking pictures of ourselves to send them to people to see if they like me, 'Do they like me?' says the 46-year-old actress, who despite being renowned for her good looks, has no problem putting beauty aside for her craft, starring makeup free in Blue Jasmine.

"It's pathetic, the whole thing about people worrying about what other people are going to think. I just can't handle it," she added.

As for the discussion of female stars' appearance at and awards show, the mother-of-four admits she understands the fascination around the fashions and the spectacle of awards shows, however her problem comes when it takes over from your achievement.

"I just can’t handle it. Of course you want people to go see the film that you make, of course you want them to enjoy them. But I'm not out there saying, 'Do they like the way I look?' 'Do they like that look on the red carpet?' You have to say, 'This is what I'm doing right now.'"

Although she admits that social media can be a "genuine way to build community", she detests the way it creates a divide and promotes jealousy.

"But the downside with social media is it divides people really quickly and sets up rivalry and jealousy and a sense of the life over there is better than the life over here.
