First, we heard that Chris Hemsworth would play a receptionist in the all-female reboot of Ghostbusters, and now another strapping young Chris has taken one for the gender equality team.

That’s right, Chris Pine will join a superhero franchise… as the love interest.

Pine has just signed on the dotted line to play the role of Steve Trevor, Wonder Woman’s erstwhile boyfriend. In the comics, Trevor is a government agent and occasional super-spy, but he has no super powers at all. None. Trevor wisely leaves the superhero antics to his girlfriend, who will be played in the films by Israeli actress Gal Gadot.

This will be Pine’s first superhero franchise, although he’s no stranger to the genre. He made his name helming the ultra-successful Star Trek reboot as the legendary Captain James T Kirk (two movies and counting, with a third in the works).

Although the story of the soon-to-be-filmed Wonder Woman film is being held tightly under wraps, we hope there’ll be a little subplot in there requiring Wonder Woman to sweep in, rescue her dude in distress, and then leave him gobsmacked while she rushes off to save the world.
