When Cate Blanchett told Variety magazine she'd had "relationships with women" recently, we were a little dubious - the quote was obviously quite abstract, and, as confirmed by the actress herself, "taken out of context".

At Cannes today, Blanchett made a point of clearing up any confusion over whether she was bisexual or not.

"From memory, the conversation ran, 'Have you had relationships with women?' And I said, 'Yes, many times. Did you mean have I had sexual relationships with women? Then the answer is no.' But that (last part) obviously didn't make into print," Blanchett said.

The 'Carol' star - who portrays a women in a same-sex relationship in the upcoming film - rightfully added that she wasn't sure why her personal life was of interest to anyone - and that it shouldn't matter if she was gay or not.

"In 2015, the point should be, 'Who cares?' Call me old-fashioned, but I thought one's job as an actor was not to present one's boring, small, microscopic universe," Blanchett said.

"My own life, is of no interest to anyone else. Maybe it is. I don't know. I'm certainly not interested in putting my own thoughts and opinions up there."

The actress, who recently adopted a daughter with husband Andrew Upton, told Variety she hopes Carol will break misconceptions in Hollywood about female-driven films.

"It was so hard," said Blanchett of getting the film made. "Midrange films with women at the centre are tricky to finance. There are a lot of people laboring under the misapprehension that people don't want to see them, which isn't true."

But Blanchett says she's hopeful things will change now that "there's been a critical mass of women who have reached a certain place in the industry".

"I want it to not be discussed anymore," she adds. "But it needs to be discussed."
