Anna Kendrick is a trailblazer for women in the film industry in many ways. In the past, she has bemoaned the lack of diversity in the roles offered to young actresses and stood up to studio execs who asked her to strike a sexy pose on the poster for Pitch Perfect 2, sparking a viral meme in the process.

Recently, Kendrick has taken it to the next level, venting her frustration about Hollywood’s gender bias in an interview with a US magazine.

“There’s [a film I’m considering] now where I have to wait for all the male roles to be cast before I can even become a part of the conversation,” she said. “Part of me gets that. [But] part of me is like, ‘What the fuck?’ You have to cast for females based on who’s cast as males?”

"To me, the only explanation is that there are so many fucking talented girls, and from a business standpoint it’s easier to find women to match the men. I totally stand by the belief that there are 10 unbelievably talented women for every role."

Kendrick, whose highly anticipated Pitch Perfect 2 is one of the few female-led – indeed, female-directed, with actress Elizabeth Banks behind the camera – films slated for release this year, also commented on the fact that movies with a women’s focus tend to be overlooked both commercially and critically.

"All the films nominated [for a Best Picture Oscar] this year had male leads. Like, every single one," Kendrick said. "So I’m glad that [equality is] feeling like a bigger issue now."

Kendrick is just one of many female stars – from Keira Knightley to Kristen Stewart – who have taken a stand on film industry sexism recently.
