Remember that scene in Sex and the City when Carrie goes to lunch with her ex-boyfriend, Big, and it doesn't exactly go as planned?

In a case of life imitating art, Sarah Jessica Parker just did the same thing with her ex of seven years, Robert Downey Jnr (though we suspect no chairs fell over at this reunion).

The celebrity pair split nearly a quarter of a century ago and haven't spoken since - but Robert reportedly decided it was time to make amends.

The actor told Howard Stern last year that he wanted to take Parker, who has been married to Matthew Broderick for the past 18 years, to lunch.

"Seeing her I was like, 'She's so great and so cool and so funny and so in command,'" he said. "I got to meet her kids and I saw the way she and Matthew live and I respect both of them so much."

Robert said seeing Parker had put their relationship back into perspective, and that he was grateful for the opportunity.

"You know, the funny thing, too, is you always have a perception of somebody that you spent a big chunk of your life with and I think it's typical...that the further you get away from that in your new relationship, you [unintentionally] taint your perception of the person," Downey explained.
