Film director Ava Duvernay and actresses Emmy Rossum and Kristin Chenowith are among the real-life women who have been immortalised as Barbie ‘Sheroes’ as part of the doll’s #BeSuper campaign.

Sheroes is the term Barbie and Mattel have dreamt up to explain women in the world who are dedicated to inspiring girls and women to believe in themselves. They are, quite simply, female super heroes. And today (April 27) has been deemed Shero day on social media, with young women sharing their own #Sheroes on social media using the #BeSuper hashtag.

To celebrate, six real-life women have been immortalised as Barbie dolls and the dolls will be auctioned off for charity today. The women include actresses Emmy Rossum and Kristin Chenoweth, who tirelessly campaign for causes including animal welfare and arts funding, pint-sized fashion designer Sydney Keiser, the five year old who has collaborated with J Crew and Eva Chen, the youngest female editor-in-chief of a fashion magazine (Chen edits American title Lucky).

But our favourite is definitely Ava DuVernay, the director of Oscar-nominated film Selma, the first black female director to be nominated for a Golden Globe. Barbie DuVernay comes with a director’s chair and with her hair in her signature braids, wearing an outfit of tweed trousers and white sneakers, ready for a long day on a film set.

DuVernay shared a picture of her Barbie likeness on her Twitter, saying “I always played w/ my sisters Jina + Tera for hours making stories + scenarios. So this is special. Thanks, @Barbie.”

Eva Chen and Emmy Rossum used Instagram to share their thoughts on the #Shero hashtag.

“Mattel made me my very own Emmy Barbie. #Shero #BeSuper #pinchme” Rossum shared on Instagram.
