The largest ever recorded sale of Gone With The Wind memorabilia happened over the weekend in Beverly Hills. Up for sale included a suit worn by hero Clark Gable in the film and hats and bonnets that appeared perched on the heads of Vivien Leigh and Olivia de Havilland in the American Civil War epic.

But the record-setting sale of the weekend was an ivory silk and black edged gown, which fetched US $137,000, the highest price for a single item at the sale. The gown, worn by Vivien Leigh as Southern belle Scarlett O'Hara in the film was the first piece purchased by collector Jim Tumblin, who worked in the hair and makeup department at Universal Studios in the '60s. He bought the dress, which he found discarded on a trash heap to be thrown out, for $20, kick-starting his interest in old Hollywood memorabilia in the process. He now has over 300,000 pieces of ephemera - including original, annotated screenplays, props, costumes and paintings and the letters of people associated with the film - in his collection.

While Scarlett's dress was the biggest seller on the day, several smaller pieces of memorabilia fetched incedible prices. A black bonnet worn by Vivien Leigh in the film was sold for $55,000 and Olivia de Havilland's straw boater was snatched up for $30,000.
