Angelina Jolie made her first public appearance since having her ovaries removed at the Kids' Choice Awards.

The actress, who won big for her role as Maleficent in the namesake film, told the audience that growing up, she'd always been told she was different - and now she realised it didn't matter.

"When I was a kid I was told - like Maleficent - that I was different," Jolie explained. "But then I realised something: different is good. So maybe you don't fit in. Be yourself."

Jolie, who had children Shiloh and Zahara in the audience, added that kids today should be proud if they're called different.

"When someone tells you that you are different just smile and hold your head up, and be proud," said Jolie. "And as your villain. I would say, 'Cause a little trouble. It is good for you!' "

Angelina's appearance at the awards show came just a few days after she revealed she underwent a procedure to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes.

The actress, who lost her mother, grandmother and aunt to cancer, said she did not regret the pre-emptive choice.

"I am now in menopause," Jolie wrote in an op-ed for the New York Times. "I will not be able to have any more children, and I expect some physical changes. But I feel at ease with whatever will come, not because I am strong but because this is a part of life. It is nothing to be feared."
