The March women – Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy – will soon be returning to the big screen. Sony is planning a remake of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved post-Civil-War-era sisterhood bible Little Women, and the studio is eyeing Canadian director Sara Polley, 36, to direct.

Polley is famous for her nuanced and complex representations of women on screen, from Michelle Williams in neo-rom-com Take This Waltz to Julie Christie’s Oscar-nominated portrayal of a woman with Alzheimer’s in Away From Her. Former Sony Co-Chairman Amy Pascal will be producing.

It’s been just over twenty years since Little Women was last in cinemas, in an adaptation directed by Australian Gillian Armstrong and starring Winona Ryder as Jo March, the story’s headstrong, bookish protagonist. Kirsten Dunst and Samantha Mathis as Amy, Claire Danes as Beth, and Christian Bale as Teddy rounded out the cast. (Does it get more ‘90s than that?) Before then, the definitive adaptation was a 1933 version starring Katherine Hepburn in the lead role.

Just for argument’s sake, we’d like to suggest Shailene Woodley to take up the mantle of Jo March. Smart, fiery and feisty (plus, we know she can rock a short hair do), Woodley would be the Jo March of our dreams. Let’s hope Hollywood is taking notes.
