The Little Mermaid live-action remake has been a long time coming. Since moving into development last year, director Sofia Coppola has dropped off the radar (sniff), and cast members have signed on and off.

But now – finally – there’s some movement, and it’s seriously cool. Chloe Grace Moretz has confirmed that she will star in the hotly-anticipated Disney film, as none other than Princess Ariel herself.

“Here it is!!” the 18-year-old wrote on her Instagram. “I’ve been waiting months to tell everyone how excited I am to take on this beautiful journey with Working Title, Universal and a beautiful script by Richard Curtis… Here we go!!!”

Yes, you read that right. The rom-com supreme maestro himself – the man behind your favorite films Notting Hill, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones’ Diary, Love Actually, About Time… need we go on? - has penned the script. Will this live-action version of the beloved Disney cartoon be less of an all-singing, all-dancing musical and more of a heart-warming romance, complete with bumbling British lead and awkward sidekicks? Here’s hoping.

The film follows in the recent tradition of rebooting Disney’s iconic canon of cartoons with live-action films. This year, Lily James stepped into Cinderella’s glass slippers, and in 2017 Emma Watson will trill ‘Bonjour’ with her nose stuck in a book in Beauty And The Beast (opposite Dan Stevens and Ewan McGregor).

At present, The Little Mermaid is shrouded in secrecy. But with Moretz' history in action films (she broke into Hollywood with her foul-mouthed turn in Kick Ass) and her serious street cred (ex boyfriend Brooklyn Beckham has praised her skills on a skateboard), one thing's for sure: this won't be your childhood's The Little Mermaid.
