Jennifer Lopez is a triple threat - she can sing, dance and act – and now, she can add United Nations Foundation’s first Global Advocate for Girls and Women to her impressive resume.

This is by no means Lopez’s first hand at philanthropy. In 2010, JLO and her sister Lynda started the Lopez Family Foundation, a not-for-profit organization aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of women and children.

After becoming a mother to seven-year-old twins Max and Emme, JLO became hyper aware of the challenges facing women and children across the world. "While some progress has been made, there is still a lot more work that needs to be done for gender equality and universal access to medical care," she said.

JLO and the Lopez Family Foundation have partnered with the UN Foundation since 2013, making her a natural fit for the new role of Global Advocate for Girls and Women.

First item on the agenda? Creating public awareness around the UN Foundation’s joint initiative with the Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action (MAMA), a program that delivers important health information to new and expecting mums via mobile phones.

“We are thrilled to work with Jennifer Lopez, who will lend her powerful voice to one of the most important causes of our generation – empowering girls and women,” said Kathy Calvin, President and CEO of the UN Foundation. “Today, not a single country in the world has achieved gender equality. This is unacceptable and everyone – including men and boys – has suffered because of it.
