Ladies and Gentlemen: the Mani Cam is no more. That’s right, E! Hollywood has scrapped the segment from its 2015 Oscars coverage, following growing discontent among celebrities and the public about the Mani Cam’s inherent sexist overtones.

The Mani Cam began life in 2012 as a small boxed set in which celebrities would be asked to walk their hands (as if on the red carpet), showing off manicures and jewellery in the process. Celebrities were confused and then begrudgingly obliging, until the 2014 Golden Globes when Mad Men star Elizabeth Moss sneakily flipped off the camera during her Mani Cam segment (with E! host Giuliana Rancic scrambling to knock her hand out of the way in the background).

Since then, a growing number of celebrities have refused to take part in the segment. At this year’s SAG Awards Best Actress nominees Julianne Moore, Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon all turned down the Mani Cam. “No Mani Cam,” Aniston said tersely, before mockingly 'whipping' the camera.

Mani Cam refusal is all part of a wider movement taking over red carpet journalism called #askhermore. The feminist campaign wants journalists to ask female stars the same questions that their male counterparts are asked, rather than an endless barrage of fashion, beauty and, yes, manicure-related questions.

There might still be a number of unknowns about this year’s Oscars (Who is going to win Best Picture? Will Eddie Redmayne snatch Best Actor from under Michael Keaton’s nose?) But at least we know one thing: there will be no Mani Cam.
