2014 was a good year to be a woman in film. Female-led films - like Scarlett Johansson's sci-fi thriller Lucy and Angelina Jolie's Disney appropriation Maleficent - ranked in the top 15 highest grossing movies of the year, alongside traditional box office fodder such as Godzilla and Transformers.

The biggest surprise? The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 took first place as the highest grossing film of 2014 (and counting, the film is still in cinemas in the US). The movie overtook popular superhero films including Guardians Of The Galaxy and Captain America for the top spot.

As if it wasn't exciting enough that a female heroine is dominating the big screen, it's actually the second consecutive year that a Hunger Games film has been that year's highest grossing movie.

In 2013, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was that year's biggest film, grossing a total of $424,668,047 in the US box office, with - yet another superhero movie - Marvel’s Iron Man 3 settling for second place. It's the first time in cinematic history that a single franchise has had back-to-back highest grossing films. Not even Harry Potter, Twilight and Lord Of The Rings achieved that level of success.

So what does this say about female-led films and the movie-going audience? We think a lot of it comes down to the Hunger Games' bankable star - Jennifer Lawrence - and near-icon status she holds in pop culture. Also, nothing better than a bit of girl power on the big screen.

Here’s hoping that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, which is slated to be released in November this year, will make it a trifecta for Jennifer Lawrence and her Young Adult film franchise.
