They might have dated for four years afterwards, but according to new reports, Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling were far from friendly during filming of The Notebook (say it isn't so!).

The film's director, Nick Cassavetes, told VH-1 the pair hated each other on set, saying Ryan wanted to kick Rachel off the movie altogether.

"Maybe I'm not supposed to tell this story, but they were really not getting along one day on set," Cassavetes explained. "Really not.

"Ryan came to me, and there's 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, 'Nick come here.'
"And he's doing a scene with Rachel and he says, 'Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?'"

Ryan then reportedly explained he "wasn't getting anything" from working with Rachel, leaving the director stunned.

Cassavetes was forced to conduct an impromptu therapy session in order to save the film from going by the wayside.

"We went into a room with a producer, they started screaming and yelling at each other," said Cassavetes.

"I walked out ... I smoked a cigarette and everybody came out like, 'All right let's do this.' And it got better after that, you know? They had it out.

"I think Ryan respected her for standing up for her character and Rachel was happy to get that out in the open."

However, Cassavetes admitted the pair remained at each other's throats for the rest of the film.

"The rest of the film wasn't smooth sailing, but it was smoother sailing," he added.

All that drama can't have been for nothing though: Ryan and Rachel translated their onscreen chemistry into real life after the film wrapped, parting ways only in 2008 (we're still in denial).
