Facebook Lists The World's Most Social Cities

It seems Sydney-siders love "checking in" on social media before going on holiday, with Facebook listing the city as number seven on its list of most social airports.

Facebook reportedly compiled the data by checking people sharing their location at airports on Facebook and through third-party location services.

Not surprisingly, one of the world's busiest airports, LAX in Los Angeles, was also one of the most checked into, taking out the number one spot on the list.

"More people prone to self-promotion per capita than perhaps any other city on the planet," commented msnbc of the findings.

Nick O'Neill, founder of Holler.com, a location-based mobile planning and search app, said checking in catered to LA's celebrity culture.

"Checking in is a self-serving sort of activity and L.A. is a hotbed of self-centeredness," explained O’Neill. "Celebrities and people like that are all about broadcasting about their awesome lives."

LAX however, put a positive spin on the findings, with airport officials saying, "We are honoured and excited for Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) being named the ‘Most Social Airport in the World' by Facebook."

In fact all the top six spots on the list were US cities, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Chicago O'Hare International Airport, San Francisco International Airport, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Denver International Airport.

While experts warn that checking in to airports can be detrimental to personal safety, the reasoner.com says personal security is each individual Facebook user's responsibility.

"If someone adds strangers to their Facebook or Foursquare account and then finds out that such strangers are visiting them in person at the places they check into, Facebook or Foursquare are not to blame," said the site. "The people sharing such information themselves are to blame."
