Battle Of The Birkin Continues: PETA Is Now A Shareholder

You know the iconic Birkin bag that comes with a hefty price tag and a wait list? Earlier this week, British actress and fashion icon Jane Birkin asked Hermès to remove her name after learning of the cruel practices used in the production of the crocodile skin handbag. And now, animal rights group PETA have purchased a single share in Hermès, in order to gain access to their shareholder meetings.

In a statement released on their website, PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman explained that the group wants Hermès to completely halt production of anything crocodile related. "PETA will be campaigning outside the company and, as a shareholder, also working from the inside to demand a ban on exotic animal-skin accessories, including crocodile-skin bags and alligator-skin watchbands," said Reiman.

Hermès have reassured the public that, “any breach of rules will be rectified and sanctioned".

Hermès imposes on its partners the highest standards in the ethical treatment of crocodiles. For more than 10 years, we have organised monthly visits to our suppliers. We control their practices and their conformity with slaughter standards established by veterinary experts and by the Fish and Wildlife (a federal American organisation for the protection of nature) and with the rules established under the aegis of the U.N.O, by the Washington Convention of 1973 which defines the protection of endangered species.

Stay tuned. We have a feeling this saga isn’t over until PETA says it’s over.
