Her last Oscars dress may have cost more than most people make in a lifetime, but this year, Cate Blanchett opted for a decidedly more low-key look.

The A-list actress attended the Academy Awards in a slim-cut black gown by designer John Galliano, who was fired from his own label, as well as Christian Dior, for making anti-Semitic comments in 2011.

Blanchett paired the look with a statement Tiffany & Co necklace worth thousands - but still not enough to rival the $100,000 Giorgio Armani gown and $18 million worth of Chopard jewels she wore in 2014.

It was Blanchett's choice of dress that had the industry buzzing though, in what was a clear nod to Galliano.

Since his downfall in 2011, the designer has worked hard to gain his way back into the fashion industry.

After attending rehab, Galliano worked quietly for Oscar de la Renta before being appointed the new creative director of Maison Martin Margiela in October last year.

Following the appointment of his new role, Galliano's employer, OTB CEO Stefano Rosso, explained why he chose to hire the designer for the role.

"Honestly, I believe John Galliano is a talent," Rosso said. "That is the only thing that we see into him. I understand his past is his past and we as Group don't comment on the past. What we do really like to comment is on the future of John Galliano, and we believe the best and only way to do so is to see his next collection."

Rosso urged consumers to look beyond Galliano's past and focus on what he could deliver in the future.
