Face

RUT: Your bronzer is the colour you wish you were.
REFRESH: One to two shades darker than your natural skin tone is as far as you should go. Bronzing quads, such as Guerlain Terracotta 4 Seasons Bronzing Powder, $93, allow you to tailor the faux glow according to the time of the year. Dust it only on the high points - temples, hairline, bridge of the nose, and cheekbones.

RUT: You apply foundation all over your face.
REFRESH: Not only does this look unnatural, it can also be ageing. "For a fresh-looking base, apply a light layer of foundation only where skin tone appears uneven," advises Piggott. Focus mainly on areas that often have a slight redness to them, like the chin, cheeks and around the nose. Try Ellis Faas Skin Veil Foundation, $110.

RUT: Tinted moisturiser is your weekend, no make-up stand-by.
REFRESH: Have you tried a blurring cream? "I'm a big fan of these," enthuses Piggott. "They minimise the appearance of pores, wrinkles and uneven skin tone, and leave the complexion looking radiant." Try L'Oreal Paris Nude Magique Blur Cream, $26.95, which comes in two shades.

RUT: You've been using the same colour brow pencil since high school.
REFRESH: There aren't many women who have the same hair colour as at their Year 12 formal. "It's important to use a brow pencil that complements your current hair colour, either the same shade or slightly lighter," says Piggott. Finish with a clear gel to keep hair in place, or use a tinted gel like Maybelline New York Brow Drama Sculpting Brow Mascara, $12.95, for extra definition.

RUT: You only use concealer on blemishes and dark circles.
REFRESH: Skin around the nostrils often has a slight redness, so dabbing a little concealer here, such as Marc Jacobs Beauty Re(Marc)able Full Cover Concealer, $46, helps even out the entire face. Two other often-missed spots: the inner corners of the eyes, and the crease in the chin.

RUT: Your go-to blush is a pink powder.
REFRESH: "Peach is actually the most flattering shade and suits all skin tones," reveals Piggott. A cream blush, like Chanel Le Blush Creme de Chanel in Presage, $60, will melt into your skin for a more believable flush.

Lips

RUT: You have 50 red lipsticks lying at the bottom of your handbag.
REFRESH: "If a red lip is your signature, why not experiment in summer with corals or hot pinks?" suggests Rimmel London international make-up artist Kirstin Piggott, who notes that the finish is as important as the shade: opaque is on trend; satin is universally flattering; and stains are youthful. For a sexy summer look, try Lancome Rouge in Love in Crazy Tangerine, $47; Bite Beauty High Pigment Pencil in Zinfandel, $36.95; Rimmel London Provocalips Lip Colour in Little Minx, $17.95; Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro in Flesh, $52; ck one Color Shine Lipstick in Twisted, $35.

RUT: You buy multiples of your favourite pinky-nude lip gloss.
REFRESH: Skin tone changes throughout the year (it will be slightly warmer in January and slightly cooler in July), so your most flattering shade of nude will also change. "To avoid looking washed out, opt for a nude that is either a shade darker or lighter than your skin tone," advises Piggott, adding that creamy and glossy finishes leave lips looking full and healthy. Try Dior Addict Gloss in Ailee, $49.
