January Jones Admits Her Hair Is Falling Out

Mad Men star January Jones has changed her hair colour multiple times over the last few months – and now the vigorous colouring process appears to be taking its toll, with the actress admitting her hair is “falling out in clumps”.

Jones told media at yesterday Screen Actors Guild Awards that as a result of the constant bleaching, she would have to “shave off (her hair) and wear a wig.”

“I’ve been blonde, red with extensions for this film, then blonde, then black, and now blonde again,” Jones explained.

Alison Roughley, senior scientist at Procter & Gamble, says bleaching the hair lifts the cuticle away to allow the colour molecules to enter, effectively robbing it of its protective surface.

“When hair is coloured, this layer is lost, making strands more porous and, consequently, drier," explains Roughley. “Over time, it can become more difficult for the cuticle to flatten properly, and lessens its ability to hold onto the pigment.”

Jones isn’t the first Hollywood star to admit that going blonde has had an adverse effect, with Lady Gaga and Kelly Osbourne both admitting that their penchant for lighter locks has nearly destroyed their hair.
“I must occasionally get a chemical haircut because my blonde hair is falling out,” Gaga told People magazine.

It seems Jones might need a little more persuading before she takes to her head with a razor however: “I like (my hair) all colours, it makes you feel different according to what colour it is, but I prefer to be blonde,” she told ABC News. “My son recognises me in photos when I am blonde. He says, ‘Mama.’”
