Mariah Carey set to kick off NFL Christmas Gameday with pretaped performance
NEW YORK — Following the abrupt cancellation of Mariah Carey’s sold-out Pittsburgh concert, Netflix has announced that the pop diva will kick off its Christmas Day football broadcast.
The streaming platform on Thursday revealed that Carey is set to perform her holiday hit, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” in a pretaped performance before the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers face off at 1 p.m. ET.
“Fresh off of her largest and most spectacular Christmas tour to date, Carey is set to dazzle fans this year with a taped performance of her record-breaking single,” Netflix said in its announcement.
In a promotional clip, the 55-year-old Grammy winner said: “This Christmas we all get our wish. The NFL is live on Netflix, and I’ll be there, too.”
For football fans without Netflix subscriptions, the Christmas Day games will air on broadcast TV in the competing team cities (CBS affiliates in Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Houston) and be available on U.S. mobile devices with NFL+.
Last month, the NFL announced Beyoncé would perform a special halftime show on Christmas Day game when the Baltimore Ravens face off against the Houston Texans in the “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer’s hometown.
Carey, who’s in the midst of a multicity Live Nation tour, cited a bout of the flu for the cancellation of her “Christmas Time” concert at Pittsburgh’s PPG Paints Arena on Wednesday just hours before showtime.
The disputable “Queen of Christmas” has concerts scheduled in the New York City area on Friday at Newark’s Prudential Center, Sunday at the UBS Arena in Belmont and Tuesday in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center.
