A man has died after rolling his ute on a major highway, closing the road for several hours.

Police say the 25-year-old lost control of his Holden Colorado while driving on the Princes Highway about 15km north of Moruya on the NSW south coast about 5.50am on Thursday.

The man, who was the only person in the vehicle, died at the scene.

No other vehicles are thought to have been involved in the crash, and nobody else was hurt in the incident, police said.

Police from South Coast Police District established a crime scene as they investigated the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The Princes Highway was closed for several hours in both directions before reopening about 1.20pm, according to Live Traffic NSW.

There has been a jump in road deaths in NSW this year, according to data from Transport for NSW. A total of 226 people have been killed so far in 2023, up from 173 in the same period last year.

Police are still investigating the crash, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
