Man's girlfriend stirs drama with ‘selfish’ behavior during family pastime: ‘She needs to grow up’

A 24-year-old man is stirring controversy after sharing the reason behind a heated conflict with his brother’s girlfriend.

The man shared the confrontation on Reddit’s AITA (Am I The A******) forum, writing under the username u/FrustratedAdam201. In his post he explained how a family tradition led to a major fallout between him and his twin brother.

“[Am I the a******] for telling my brother his girlfriend can’t be in the room when we are watching [soccer] anymore?” the Redditor titled his post.

Apparently, the twin brothers are major fans of the English Premier League team Arsenal, and they always watch the club’s games together in the apartment they share. That was before the man’s brother started dating a new woman, who strongly dislikes the sport.

“His girlfriend has been in the room every match that’s been on since they are apparently joined at the hip and she can’t go and do her own thing for a few hours,” the Redditor wrote. “All she does is complain about how stupid the game is and how it’s just a game and we are dumb for taking it so seriously.”

‘I scared her so much that she almost cried’

The man wrote that his brother’s girlfriend would constantly talk during Arsenal’s games, telling them “about all the gossip between her friends,” which he said he didn’t want to hear.

“I keep telling her I don’t want to talk and want to concentrate on the game,” he wrote. “And she gets really offended, saying, ‘Oh I am so sorry for tearing you away from your precious game.'”

One day, Arsenal won a big game and the man started screaming particularly loudly. The girlfriend, seemingly upset by the yelling, ran off to another room.

“My brother went to talk to her and came back in saying I needed to go and apologize because I scared her so much that she almost cried,” the Redditor wrote. “I told him ‘No I am allowed to celebrate my team scoring how I want in my own home.'”

‘I never want her to be there’

After the game, the man’s brother left the apartment with his girlfriend, but returned later, still angry about the confrontation.

“My brother came back later and we argued again and I told him that I never want her to be there when I am watching a match again because she ruins it for me,” the man wrote. “Our relationship is certainly rocky because of this.”

The Redditor’s post drew more than 1,300 comments, and a wide range of responses to the fight. Many believed that the man was in the right, calling his brother’s girlfriend “selfish” or “rude” for disrupting the games.

“So she doesn’t like football but insists on being there when it’s on and ruining it for everyone else? It’s your house, your rules,” one commenter wrote. “Sounds like the gf needs to grow up.”

“You don’t have to be a sports fan to know it is rude to constantly be telling someone how stupid their sport is and that they are dumb for taking it seriously. You also don’t have to be a sports fan to know it is rude to carry on talking when someone has said they want to concentrate on the game,” another added.

Some even argued that the fight was indicative of larger issues, and maybe a sign the brother and his new girlfriend should break up.

“Let me get this straight…you & your brother have watched games this way for years…GF comes in & wants 1 or both of you to stop your tradition…because she’s a princess? Dude, that’s a serious behavior red flag,” one user wrote.

Others users were much more sympathetic to the girlfriend though. Several wrote that they understood her complaint, but thought she could have handled the situation differently.

“Being a host doesn’t give you the right to be impolite,” one user wrote of the man’s reaction.

“She sounds annoying, but I have anxiety and I know it bothers me when people are so loud toward me,” another added.
