The Internet Is In Shambles After A MAGA Newscaster Incorrectly Calls "Wicked" Star Ariana Grande "Hispanic" As She Tries To Argue That The Film Is Too "Woke"

Another day, another ignorant rant from a MAGA personality.

Dr. Gina Loudon, a MAGA media personality who was a member of President-elect Donald Trump's campaign media advisory board in 2020 and the co-chair of Women for Trump, recently complained on her show that Wicked had gone "woke."

Now, Dr. Loudon has a show called Dr. Gina Prime Time, which airs on the far-right cable network Real America’s Voice. She decided to attack Wicked for being "woke" on a segment this week.

In case you've missed the last four years of conservative talking points, those on the far right like to call anything with diversity "woke." Their entire argument surrounding this talking point is that Hollywood is including minorities and underserved communities in movies and TV shows...which somehow is a bad thing?

They must have missed the memo on capitalism, which is defined as "an economic system where private individuals or organizations own the means of production, and prices and distribution of goods are determined by competition in a free market." So companies freely choosing to include more diverse casts in an effort to appeal to more consumers and make more money is literally just capitalism. But I digress.

Dr. Loudon's main complaint about Wicked being "woke" was that they cast Ariana Grande as Glinda.

“I saw it, but I was very excited at the idea of seeing the interpretation of this. But I should have known it’s Holly-weird," she began.

"I should've known they'd try to make it woke in the ways that they could think of," she continued. "Let's just start with the fact that they have Ariana Grande, who is obviously a Hispanic woman, playing the part of a ditzy, blonde, white really villain, when it comes right down to it, for this particular movie," she continued. "The racism and the racial appropriation I just thought was offensive, frankly."

For the record, Grande is not Hispanic. She is an Italian American, which falls under the umbrella of "white" in America's modern racial hierarchy.

One of the main tools of white supremacy in America is choosing who gets to be "white." This is the main reason why many people believe race is a social construct. For example, many European immigrants were not considered white in the early 1900s.

Originally, you had to be from England, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, or Scandinavian countries to be considered "white." Immigrants from Italy, Greece, Hungary, and other Eastern European countries were not "white" enough and had to "fight" for that label. Immigrants from these countries were considered "dirty" and placed below "white" immigrants, but above Black and brown ones. Yikes.

Dr. Loudon's suggestion that Grande, who is of Italian descent, is "obviously Hispanic" echoes arguments used by white supremacists in the past. These statements were used to try and separate and rank white-ness, creating a racial hierarchy. It's no surprise a MAGA talking head would try to use this tactic in 2024.

Also, you can be white and Hispanic. Being Hispanic has nothing to do with race; it simply means you're from a country that was colonized by Spain. You can be Black and Hispanic, or white and Hispanic.

Of course, the internet had some thoughts about Dr. Loudon's rant.
