Why MAFS' Melissa and Dino's relationship 'won't work'

She’s lively and loud and he’s sensitive and spiritual – but on tonight’s episode of Married at First Sight relationship experts thought Melissa and Dino would make the perfect match.

From the moment we were introduced to Melissa, 38, and Dino, 35, it very quickly became clear that we were about to witness two worlds colliding on television.

Talent agent Melissa, from NSW, has been single for eight years and revealed to the relationship experts that she had “never felt secure in any relationship”.

“I want to be with someone who loves me for me,” she explained.

Dino is a meditation facilitator from Western Australia who said his “big purpose” is to “spread inner peace”.

He believes in “beauty on the inside and appreciating women the way they are.”

Sounds like things could go quite well for the couple?

Experts John Aiken, Mel Schilling and Dr Trisha Stratford believed Dino would be the perfect man for Melissa, as he would “accept her wholeheartedly”.

“She really needs someone who is going to balance out her energy, be the yin to her yang, be the calming voice of reason,” John said during the matching process.

“I think the compatibility with these two is really strong. Mel is someone who loves to talk, she can get anxious in relationships. And Dino is a great listener and I think he will calm her down.”

Clinical Psychotherapist Claire McHalick however thinks these fundamental differences in personality will spell doom for the relationship long-term.

“Melissa is a very different person to Dino. She is from mainstream Aussie culture, whereas Dino is from a culture of spirituality,” Claire tells Yahoo Lifestyle.

“Dino is more open, trusting, untraumatised, and wants to allow Melissa to be different to him in whatever way that may transpire.

“My feeling is that this is not going to work out for them. Their ways of life are too different and just being nice people, which both of them seem to be, is not going to bridge that divide.”

Their differences became clear quickly in the episode, as we watched Melissa stress about being two hours late on the big day, while Dino meditated in the limo on the way to the ceremony.

He arrived on horseback, which Melissa loved, and even got down on one knee to ‘officially propose’ to his bride before the ceremony got underway.

But during the reception we heard Melissa say: “it worries me because I’m not spiritual. I kind of find that stuff funny.”

Fast forward to the wedding night and Claire points out that there is a disconnect between Melissa and Dino.

Melissa revealed she hadn’t had sex in eight years, and during the wedding photo shoot and the wedding night it became clear she was very reserved when it came to intimacy.

“Melissa is disconnected from Dino,” Claire tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “This is particularly evident in the first night together in bed. Melissa can’t bring herself to accept even the slightest touch from Dino, her automatic response is to prevent him from coming close.

“Dino is kidding himself when he says they have a connection. Even as he looks at her she will not meet his gaze.

“He is going to have to be honest with himself and speak openly with her for any possibility of them finding happiness together.”
