MAFS expert John: 'We got it wrong'

It was clear from the start that Melissa and Dino’s worlds were fundamentally different, but the couple made it through to the halfway point of Married at First Sight before calling it quits during last night’s commitment ceremony.

Melissa felt Dino had severed any trust between the pair, after he secretly recorded a phone conversation she had with her sister. While he apologised to some extent it wasn’t enough to salvage the marriage and both decided to ‘leave’ the experiment.

Talking about her experience on the show, Melissa revealed on Today that there was never a point where she thought “Dino is the one”, but she was always open to finding out if he was.

Appearing alongside relationship expert John Aiken, hosts Deb and Georgie then put it to John asking him “did you get it wrong?”

“At the end of the day we did get this wrong,” John admitted during the segment. “The ones that leave we are obviously disappointed because we haven’t got it right.”

He said when they matched Dino and Melissa, all the experts were very “hopeful” the relationship would work, admitting they thought “they would be really good together”.

“Melissa has this huge energy and Dino does tend to get inside his head a little bit and is very spiritual,” John explained. “So she could bring him out, but also, he had the calming type of aura that could bounce off Mel’s high energy.

“But as it turns out, spiritually I think right from the word go the language that they spoke, they just weren’t able to click, and they never really got out of first gear.”

Clinical Psychotherapist Claire McHalick revealed back when we were first introduced to Mel and Dino that these fundamental differences in personality would spell doom for the relationship long-term.

“Melissa is a very different person to Dino. She is from mainstream Aussie culture, whereas Dino is from a culture of spirituality,” Claire told Yahoo Lifestyle at the start of the series.

“Dino is more open, trusting, untraumatised, and wants to allow Melissa to be different to him in whatever way that may transpire.

“Their ways of life are too different and just being nice people, which both of them seem to be, is not going to bridge that divide.”
