As top-tier musical royalty, Madonna’s interactions are presumably often shrouded in excitement by the other party.

But when she met the actual Queen the tables very much turned, leaving the musical monarch hilariously red-faced.

Queen meets Queen

The infamous interaction took place back in 2002, at the premiere of the James Bond flick Die Another Day—as Madonna had provided the vocals for its accompanying track.

As the moment neared, the pop star reportedly practised her curtesy in preparation for the meet and greet with the monarch alongside comedy legend co-star John Cleese.

However, although her royal protocol was carried out flawlessly, it was the Queen of England’s lack of knowledge about who the Queen of Pop was that sent the meeting off course.

The commotion began when Her Majesty asked a courtier about Madonna to which he informed her she had performed the title track.

"Oh really, did you?" she asked in surprise, an answer which reportedly send the star into a fit of nervous giggles.

Despite the confusion, Madonna walked away confident from the brief but memorable interaction.

“The Queen asked me about Bond,” she told reporters at the time. “I have never met her before but surprisingly I wasn't nervous.”

And luckily for Madonna, she wasn’t the only one the Queen wasn’t familiar with. Moments later, the monarch moved onto Monty Plyton’s Mr Cleese and before asking him “what do you do?”
