Madonna Teases That Her Movie About Her Life Is Back in the Works — and It Has a New Title!
The biopic — which was first announced in 2020 — has been reworked and titled 'Who's That Girl'
The Madonna movie seems to be back on track.
Nearly a year and half after the project was put on an indefinite hold, the Queen of Pop teased that her long-awaited, self-directed biopic is in the works once again — as she appeared to also reveal its title!
In an Instagram post shared Tuesday, July 16, the pop superstar, 65, posed with a typewriter and the project’s previously untitled screenplay. The title now reads Who’s That Girl — a clear nod to the singer’s 1987 film and (and song!) of the same name.
Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer's Body) had first paired up with Madonna to write the screenplay but departed the film to work on other projects, according to Entertainment Weekly. Per the Instagram post, the new version of the script features “rewrites by Madonna and ECW,” indicating that the star has collaborated with Secretary scribe Erin Cressida Wilson to rework the film.
Though blurred, the updated pages of the script show the duo’s updates through arrows, scribbles and other edits.

Alongside the photos, the "Material Girl" singer also alluded that the production — which she is not only writing and directing, but also producing — will require a big budget.
“I Need A-lot of Bandz to make this………..OKAY 🍸💵🤑," she wrote, adding, “Story of my life."
Madonna, who first announced the biopic in 2020, did not share any casting details in her new post, but Ozark’s Julia Garner — who was originally set to portray the star — is still attached to the project, Entertainment Weekly reports.
Another Julia was also previously in talks to join the cast. In January 2022, Uncut Gems’ Julia Fox was reportedly set to play the singer's longtime friend, actress Debi Mazar (Empire Records, Younger).

When the then-untitled biopic was first announced, Madonna said in a statement, "I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer — a human being, trying to make her way in this world.”
Plus, she revealed at the time, the “focus of this film will always be music.”
“Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive.” she continued. “There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”
