She’s a champion for gender equality and isn’t afraid to share her opinions, and now Lisa Wilkinson has let the whole world know what she really thinks of Meghan Markle’s role in the royal family.

The 59-year-old The Project host, who quit her job as co-presenter of the Today show in 2017 due in part to unequal pay, claims the 37-year-old Duchess of Sussex ‘married into the wrong family’.

“The only pity I reckon with Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, is I feel she is so intelligent and so good at public speaking, she’s really strong in areas like girls’ education and homelessness, poverty. I think, did she marry into the wrong family?” Lisa said on Monday night’s episode of The Project.

She went on to say that she believed Meghan will ‘probably get held back’ by the family as she tries to do good in the world.

When her colleague, Steve Price, brought up the fact that Meghan now has a bigger platform to push her causes, Lisa said: “She does, I just hope they don’t clip her wings, she’s a very smart woman”.

Lisa Wilkinson sensationally quit her role on the Today show in 2017 after 10 years, citing the gender pay gap between herself and co-host Karl Stefanovic as one of the main reasons for the move.

“There were lots of reasons why it was time to make a move, and that [pay gap] was part of it. I was very happy that it reignited the conversation, because the gender pay gap is real,” Lisa said in an interview with Stellar magazine last year.

Meghan Markle is a massive advocate for gender equality and women’s rights, with her speech at the UN Women conference in 2015 going viral.

“It is just imperative: women need a seat at the table, they need an invitation to be seated there, and in some cases, where this is not available, well then, you know what, they need to create their own table. We need a global understanding that we cannot implement change effectively without women’s political participation,” she said at the time.

The Duchess also spoke eloquently about feminism on Friday as she sat on a panel at King’s College London for International Women’s Day.

She also told the audience that she hopes her and Prince Harry’s baby will grow up to be a feminist.

“I’d seen this documentary on Netflix about feminism and one of the things they said during pregnancy was ‘I feel the embryonic kicking of feminism’,” she said.

“I love that. So boy or girl or whatever it is, we hope that that’s the case with our little bump.”
