Before that, Wilson was the editor of New Idea and launched OK! Magazine in Australia.

Today's news follows the resignation of Helen McCabe from The Australian Women's Weekly in January, following six and a half years as the editor-in-chief.

She will start the new role in the coming months.

In a statement on The Australian Women's Weekly website, she said: "I'm honoured and excited to be stepping into the shoes of so many great editors before me.

"I can't wait to join such a well-respected team, roll up my sleeves and deliver great stories for our readers.

"The Australian Women's Weekly holds a special place in the hearts of Australian women, I hope to do them proud."
