Liam Payne died of 'multiple traumas' and hemorrhages, initial autopsy reveals

The One Direction member died of "multiple traumas" and "internal and external hemorrhages" after falling from the balcony of his Buenos Aires hotel room.

An autopsy is shedding more light into the untimely death of One Direction member Liam Payne.

An autopsy report from Argentina's National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor's Office determined the 31-year-old One Direction singer died of "multiple traumas" and "internal and external hemorrhages” after falling from the third-floor balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, according to a translated press release originally written in Spanish.

Payne was pronounced dead at 5:07 p.m. local time on Wednesday after falling multiple stories from the CasaSur Palermo Hotel, per the release. It noted that hotel staff had called 911 just minutes earlier requesting assistance for an unnamed guest who was claimed to be "under the influence of drugs and alcohol and had destroyed some objects in the room."

By the time emergency services and police arrived, the release stated that “Payne had already fallen from the balcony of his room and died on the spot due to the severity of his injuries.” The prosecutor's office added that the incident is being investigated as what was translated as either a "doubtful death" or "suspicious death,” but claimed that “everything indicates that the musician was alone when the fall occurred, and was going through some kind of outbreak due to substance abuse.”

A medical examination of Payne’s body revealed that he sustained 25 injuries that were consistent with those caused by falling from a significant height, with the release noting that the injury to his skull alone was “sufficient to cause death." The examiners have also reportedly requested further histopathological, biochemical, and toxicological testing that may “confirm, rectify and/or complement the aforementioned macroscopic conclusions.”

The prosecution added that, due to the injuries that Payne sustained in the incident, it is presumed that he “did not adopt a reflex posture to protect himself and that he could have fallen into a state of semi- or total unconsciousness.” The police's Mobile Criminalistics Unit reportedly found destroyed objects and furniture inside Payne’s hotel room as well as substances that “at first glance — and pending confirmation from the experts — would be narcotics and alcoholic beverages.”

Payne was in Argentina where he attended a concert by his former bandmate Niall Horan. Along with Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, Payne and Horan made up the boy band One Direction, which was formed in 2010, after each auditioning individually for reality competition show The X Factor. The band placed third on the show and went on to become global superstars, releasing five albums and touring the world before going on an indefinite hiatus in 2015.

Prior to the release of the autopsy, Buenos Aires Security Ministry communications director Pablo Policicchio said that Payne "had jumped from the balcony of his room."

An investigation into Payne's death is underway to determine more details of how it happened. The new report stated that forensic experts found “no defensive injuries” on Payne’s hands and that “no injuries were observed that would suggest the intervention of third parties."

It added that testimonies were taken from three hotel staff members as well as two women who had spent time with Payne hours earlier, but had left prior to his death.

Payne is survived by his son Bear, whom he shares with ex Cheryl Cole, as well as his fiancée Kate Cassidy.
