Last of Us boss shares update on his "weird" Pirates of the Caribbean reboot

The Last of Us boss Craig Mazin has spoken about his Pirates of the Caribbean movie, teasing that it's going to be pretty out there.

Alongside his work on the huge HBO series, Mazin has been helping Denis Villeneuve with writing on Dune: Part Two, and slowly tinkering away at a new Pirates film that was announced in 2019.

Speaking to the LA Times, he spoke about how he's been working on it with Ted Elliot, who co-wrote the first three films: Curse of the Black Pearl, Dead Man's Chest, and At World's End.

Speaking about his Pirates movie, he said: "We pitched it and thought there's no way they're buying it, it's too weird. And they did!

"And then [Ted] wrote a fantastic script, and the strike happened and everyone's waiting around."

It's unknown if the new film will feature Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow or not. A lot of reviews for the poorly-received fifth film stated that the character had overstayed his welcome.

It's not the only setback that's happened to the franchise. Alongside the sixth film, Margot Robbie was announced as the new lead of a spin-off series, although last year she explained that it's probably dead in the water now.

"We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led – not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story – which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it," she said.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer still thinks it will happen, but not until after the sixth film, but with the strike-induced delay, who knows if or when.

All five Pirates of the Caribbean films are available to stream now on Disney+.
