Larry Fitzgerald moves to No. 2 all-time on career receptions list

There are some players who will walk into the Hall of Fame in Canton when their careers are done. Larry Fitzgerald, he’s going to sprint.

Fitzgerald, the ageless wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals, caught five passes for 47 yards Sunday in Arizona’s 27-10 loss to Seattle. That in itself wasn’t notable. What was, was the fact that those five catches pushed Fitzgerald past Tony Gonzalez on the all-time receptions list, behind only Jerry Rice.

The list runs like this, from third to first: Gonzalez, 1,325; Fitzgerald, 1,326; Rice, 1,549. In the most amazing of coincidences, Jerry Rice himself was in the house:

Fitzgerald now sits 223 catches behind Rice. Given that Fitzgerald has averaged 91 catches a year over the last five complete seasons, Fitzgerald could pass Rice late in the 2021 season if he opts to stick around that long. Is that alone enough to keep him on what’s going to be a rocky Cardinals team for a couple years to come?
