Kieran Culkin admits he never watched the “Succession” finale: 'I missed the moment'

"I know what happens — at least I think," the actor told Stephen Colbert.

Actors don't always get to see their finished products before audiences. Sure, they know the scenes they've acted in, but they're usually not in the editing room and often have to wait to see the final movie or TV episode along with everybody else. If they have a particularly busy schedule, they might never get around to watching it.

Apparently, that has happened with Kieran Culkin and the end of Succession. Despite winning an Emmy for his performance as Roman Roy in the final season (his first in the lead actor category, beating out costars Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox in the process), Culkin confirmed to Stephen Colbert on Wednesday night that he still has not watched the series finale episode. Culkin had previously said this in January on the Emmys tour, but nine months later, he still hasn't been able to watch the episode.

"It's pretty good!" Colbert told him.

"I've heard! I mean, I was there. I read it, I was there for it, I know what happens — at least I think," Culkin said. That wasn't really on purpose — at least, not at first. I guess it sort of is now."

Culkin then gave his full explanation for the oversight. It involves the filming of A Real Pain, his new movie with Jesse Eisenberg (who also wrote and directed it) which premiered at Sundance earlier this year and is set for a limited theatrical release on Nov. 1.

"I was in Poland shooting this movie when the last three episodes were airing, and I couldn't log into my Max account," Culkin said. "So my wife actually went on Instagram and said hey, if there's anyone who can give your sign-in so Kieran can watch the last couple episodes? And people did! Everyone just gave over their email and password and stuff. I was able to watch the eighth and ninth episode, but then before the last one I moved to a different hotel that didn't have a smart TV, so I just couldn't watch it then."

Culkin continued, "then I went home, did a vacation, blah blah blah. You know when it's like a couple months old? I kinda missed the moment. Does that not make sense? Maybe it doesn't make sense."

Missing the initial release of a big TV episode like that also means that, after a while, you forget the setup and might need to rewatch other episodes to prepare. Culkin said his wife, Jazz Charton, suggested they do a full rewatch of the show before getting to the finale, and "that's the plan, and has been, for however long it's been. A year and a half?"

"Well spoiler, but things work out great for you," Colbert said sarcastically.
