Kiefer Sutherland Honors Late Father Donald Sutherland With Emotional Tribute

Kiefer Sutherland is speaking out following the passing of his father, Donald Sutherland.

The 24 alum took to Instagram shortly after the tragic news broke on Thursday, June 20, to pay tribute to his legendary father, who passed away earlier the same day after a battle with a long, unspecified illness.

Alongside a sweet, black and white photo of Donald holding Kiefer as a young boy, his fellow actor confirmed his passing, writing, "With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away."

He went on to applaud his illustrious career, adding, "I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that."

"A life well lived," he concluded.

Friends and fans were quick to offer their own kind words about the M.A.S.H. star, with one dubbing him "an absolute legend."

"So sorry Kiefer," another wrote, calling him "a total gentleman" before agreeing that it's "a great loss indeed."

"Kiefer I am so sorry to hear," a third comment read, going on to call Donald "a giant in the industry."

"What an incredible actor," another comment of condolence mused. "And what a brilliant career."

In addition to Kiefer, Donald is survived by sons Rossif, Angus, and Roeg, daughter Rachel, wife Francine, and four grandchildren.

His family will be holding a private celebration of life.
