Kate Garraway has revealed she is still hanging onto the "hope of a miracle” after her husband Derek Draper’s lengthy COVID battle.

The Good Morning Britain presenter’s husband spent more than a year in hospital after falling ill with the coronavirus and now needs round the clock care.

Garraway opened up in new BBC Two series Walking With…, which saw her go on a stroll through the Cotswolds.

The star said it was the first time that she’d had a whole day to herself since her husband fell ill and revealed that it gave her some solace.

“When I was doing a lot of mindfulness and just trying to create some space in my head when it feels like life is quite overwhelming, it’s much easier to do when you’re somewhere like this,” she said.

Garraway went on: “It’s much easier to hang on to the hope of a miracle isn’t it; a great sense that anything can happen.

‘When I still do feel the crisis and worry about what Derek’s future is, and therefore what our future is, since he contracted COVID I find that just focusing on one thing helps you to calm your mind down.”

The 54-year-old told Woman's Own magazine: "This year, we have got him home - and fingers crossed we can keep him home.

"Of course, he's not going to be putting on his Santa costume, going out with Darcey for a father-and-daughter Christmas shop or the same with [son] Billy.

"None of those things are on the horizon at the moment so it's adjusting to a new normal but also grateful he's here at all, which we didn't have at all last year and feared would never happen."
