Yahoo Lifestyle Josh Gordon's Super Bowl LIII ring sells for $138,000 at auction
Former New England Patriots receiver Josh Gordon was willing to part ways with an important part of his career over the weekend. Gordon’s Super Bowl LIII ring sold for $138,000 at an auction Sunday.
The ring was sold through Heritage Auctions, and it wasn’t the only major piece of sports memorabilia up for purchase. A Michael Jordan rookie card sold for $420,000 and a Mickey Mantle bat sold for $288,000.
The Gordon ring, however, stands out, as Gordon didn’t even play in Super Bowl LIII. He was suspended by the NFL in December. Gordon finished that season with 41 catches for 737 yards and four touchdowns. Despite not playing in the Super Bowl, Gordon was given a Super Bowl ring for his contributions to New England during the regular season.
It’s unclear why Gordon decided to sell the ring.
Josh Gordon seeking reinstatement again after another suspension
Gordon, 29, is once again seeking reinstatement after he was suspended last December. It was the fifth time Gordon was suspended by the league.
Gordon applied for reinstatement in June, though NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has not announced a ruling on Gordon’s status. If Gordon is cleared, he would join the free-agent market. Gordon finished last season as a member of the Seattle Seahawks, and the team is said to have interest in bringing Gordon back.
After showing a ton of promise early in his career, multiple suspensions have put a damper on Gordon’s play. He’s still capable of making highlight-reel catches, but he hasn’t been on the field long enough to come close to the numbers he put up during his 2013 breakout.
