Jon M. Chu teases second “Wicked” movie: 'If Part 1 is about choices, Part 2 is about consequences'
"There's a lot of soul searching in movie 2," the director says.
Warning: This article contains spoilers from Wicked: Part 1.
Audiences that have already seen Wicked are likely looking to the Western sky for more details on the second film, which isn't scheduled to hit theaters until Nov. 21, 2025. However, we have some insight which just might make you happy enough to melt.
Director Jon M. Chu teases the second film, which will be comprised of the second act of the stage musical, as well as additional content (and new songs!).
"If Part 1 is about choices, Part 2 is about consequences," Chu tells Entertainment Weekly. "Choices are difficult to make, but when you do make those choices, sometimes the result isn't what you expect it to be. It can be lonely, it can be hard."

While Part 1 follows Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) as she discovers the truth about the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and comes into her power, Part 2 will pick up with Elphaba on the run, as the Wizard and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) continue to demonize and spread lies about her. As for Glinda (Ariana Grande), she chose not to go with Elphaba, so what is in store for her? Will she and Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) actually get married? And how will Elphaba's disappearance impact Nessa (Marissa Bode) and Boq (Ethan Slater)?
"There's a lot of soul searching in movie 2," Chu teases. "They're asking, 'Is this the right decision that you made?'"
While Act II of the Wicked stage musical has always been known for going a bit darker than the musical's first half, Chu wants to assure viewers that there will still be moments of levity and joy in the second film. "There is lots of lightness in the movie," he explains. "There's a lot of fun parts. We've not forgotten about that, but there's a matureness and a nuance to it that we earn from the first movie. The second movie really gets to play with [that maturity]."
Wherever Elphaba and Glinda's story ends, we can bet on one thing: they'll have rewritten each other's stories by being friends.

As for Chu, while he still has plenty to do on the second film, he hopes to return to the genre again and again. "I want to do an absurd musical," he says. "I want to do something you can just go nuts on, but I hope that I never have to stop making musicals. It's too much fun."
The first part of Wicked is now in theaters.
